Lot 793
Arsall Cameo Glass Vase. Height: 8". Acid-cut green blossoms and leaves on light pink background, signed in cameo. Minor evidence of use inside neck, one very small area of abrasion visible on close examination of leaves. Else, fine condition.

French cameo glass came into its own in the late 19th century and flourished through the Art Nouveau period: the gorgeous Art Nouveau styling and wonderful colors that distinguish this signed vase are a signature of that time. Although Arsall is not so well known as glassmakers Gallé or Daum Nancy, his glass is equally beautiful and becoming more and more popular with collectors.
Estimated Value $800 - 1,000.

Lot 798
Durand King Tut Vase. 20" tall, 8" at widest point. Large iridescent green bulbous stick vase with blue King Tut design, cased with amber iridescent glass. Signed "Durand / 1974 - 12" with proper "V". Two noteworthy flaws: one on the neck and the other on the widest part of the body -- these appear to be from the factory. The surface shows some wear, but otherwise the vase is in good to very good condition.

Although Victor Durand only operated his glassworks from 1924 until his death in 1931 (the factory was sold in 1934), the operation managed to produce some of the most striking glass of the 1920s.
Estimated Value $900 - 1,500.

A well-loved piece, the elaborate gold trim is worn throughout but the wonderful shape and elaborate feet set this cup apart from other similar items. Obviously produced for the very wealthy, this cup is of the highest quality and the decoration makes it obvious it was to be used on formal occasions. A lovely piece of the past.

Lot 808
Satin Glass Vase with Coralene Decoration. Probably late Victorian, attributed to Webb, 8½" quilted vase with ruffled rim and mother of pearl finish. Painted signature at base, "D. Fya" (or "D. 74a"). Light pink base shades to dark pink top, white liner. Polished pontil. Gold coralene decoration remains intact, with little loss of beading. Some signs of use on interior but the overall condition, particularly the state of the coralene, is very good to fine.

The coralene design process involved painting a design on glass with a sticky enamel paint, applying the small glass beads and then reheating the piece so the beads partially melted into the painted design. Developed in Bohemia in the 1880s, the decorative technique rapidly gained popularity in the United States and remained so into the 1920s. The Victorian piece offered here retains almost all of its beading and is a lovely example of coralene decoration.

Polished pontil. Two noticeable production flaws (neither major) on gold aurene, otherwise excellent condition.

Tiffany Candy Dish. 8½" diameter. Pale yellow optic swirls radiate to a gently fluted rim. Signed "L.C. Tiffany". Polished pontil. Minor abrasions where the rim meets the bowl are camouflaged by the shape of the piece, minor abrasions on the base of the bowl and on the outside of the rim are also camouflaged by the shape and decoration of the dish.

Tiffany Favrile Pastel Dish. Circa 1920. Height: 4", diameter: 7". Signed on bottom "L.C.Tiffany - Favrile 1847". One 2" L-shaped crack mars this beautiful piece, causing a slight color change at the rim of the bowl, but the shape and nature of the damage may indicate a factory flaw rather than subsequent damage. There is a small burst bubble just off the bottom of the bowl.

The uncommon plum color, which gracefully shades into the white opalescence of the stem and foot, the lovely stretched iridescence at the rim and the graceful lines overshadow this bowl's minor flaws.

Tiffany Turtleback Tile Lamp. 21" high, 15.5" diameter. Beautiful golden and amber glass shade accented by elegant gold base. Shade marked "Tiffany Studios, New York 1434", base marked "Tiffany Studios New York 533". The base may be of later manufacture. Lightbulb sockets marked with November 26, 1907 patent. Minor finish wear on base, otherwise excellent condition.

"Turtleback" glass tiles were an innovation of the Tiffany Studios in which the iridescence characteristic of Favrile glass was combined with very organic, uneven surfaces to distinctive effect. When illuminated, turtleback glass appears to be lit from within and casts a subtle opalescent glow. The lamp offered here presents an outstanding example of Tiffany Studios' use of turtleback glass -- the soft, golden tones of the regular glass tiles, together with the striking golds and creams of the turtleback tiles, create a warm, uniquely inviting incandescence.

Meissen-style Vase. Probably 19th century. Height: 14½", 7¼" at widest point. Distinctive Meissen-style vase, flattened baluster form, with painted panels and gold trim. One side painted with rendering of an impressive mosque, the other with a depiction of a warrior on a gold field; both paintings are signed "AM". "1748" and "D" are incised in the bottom of the vase, which looks like it may have originally been tinted orange. There are finish flaws in the blue and gold ground on the sides, bottom and top of the vase -- including two small spots of paint loss. One of the bottom corners has broken off and the area was retouched (this is not an obvious flaw, as the paintings draw the eye more than any other feature), there are minor flecks in the bodies of the paintings. An impressive piece reflecting the European fascination with the exotic, in good condition.

Soviet Porcelain Figure. Soviet-era porcelain folk tale figure, probably post-World War II. Height: 10". Beautifully detailed, hand-painted figure holds a feather while another drags behind him, this is probably Prince Ivan with feathers from the Firebird ("Ivanov" is written on the base). The State Porcelain Factory's green hammer and sickle mark is partially worn away, "EK" in cyrillic letters in a crescent or shield is impressed, "510111" and another, obliterated, mark are present on the bottom. Two very small areas of repair at bottom of tunic and minor paint loss at fold of pantaloons. Very good condition.

With Soviet porcelain becoming increasingly collectible (and the prices going up accordingly), we are pleased to offer this wonderful piece. The noble Prince Ivan, portrayed so beautifully here, was a popular figure in Russian folk lore and a natural subject for this medium, as under Soviet rule (with much subject matter deemed politically risky) Russian porcelain artists came to rely on traditional folk tales for inspiration.

Lot 838
Haviland China. Place settings for twelve, with multiple serving pieces including salt and pepper shakers, a large platter, several vegetable dishes, a butter server and other items. The set is Haviland Limoges (although a few of the salt and pepper shakers are from other manufacturers) and handpainted, with many of the pieces dated 1917 and signed by the artist. The breadth of the collection and the unique quality of the painting lead us to believe this was a set done as a gift, probably for a wedding or anniversary, by someone who knew the recipients.
Delicate roses are strewn across a blue-green washed background and gilt accents, particularly on the handles and flourishes of ribbon motif, lend a quality of richness to the set. Obviously treasured by the owners, this china was used only on special occasions, as is evidenced by the very light wear the pieces show. A bit of the gold paint has worn away in a few spots, and there are a mere handful of chips or repairs scattered throughout the entire group, making this a uniquely intact and presentable (and very usable) set of dishes. An instant heirloom, this reminder of gentler times is surely a prize to be won.

Interested bidders should call for a full inventory and condition report.
Because of the nature of this lot, the successful bidder will pay for professional packing and shipping.

Pair of Art Nouveau Cloisonne Vases. Late 19th or early 20th century. Outstanding and unusual pair of brass vases with intricate design in cloissone with varying shades of blue enamel. Unsigned. Minor abrasions to the bases, minor finish wear to brass at tops and enamel on sides, a handful of tiny nicks on each vase, one vase has a shallow but long (1¼") dent in its side. Both pieces would benefit from a gentle professional cleaning. Overall, very good condition.

We have never seen cloisonne of such intricate design: hundreds of tiny swirls decorate each vase and are set off by an acanthus border at the neck and leaf flourishes on the body. The quality of the cloisonne work bespeaks Japanese manufacture and the decoration points firmly at the European market. This is a fabulous combination of color and design, recalling alternately the decorative arts of the Empire and the Art Nouveau periods. A true find.
